Take Action

Bantry General Hospital

Neurology patients are travelling 60 – 112 km to see their neurologists1. Local neurology services planned, but still not delivered2. Don’t neurology patients deserve the right care, in the right place and at the right time?

According to the Neurology Model of Care Bantry General Hospital should have a permanent consultant neurologist providing care for patients in the local community2. These patients, many of whom suffer from serious and disabling neurological conditions could be seen quicker and closer to home as outlined in Sláintecare.

Please take this opportunity to contact the Oireachtas members that represent constituents in your area. Patients deserve better. Take action now.

Dear Deputy/Senator,

Access to a consultant neurologist should be equally distributed across the country, so that the care you receive as a neurology patient does not depend on where you live. However neurology patients are travelling 60 – 112km to receive the care they need, although local neurology services have been planned for some time. Bantry General Hospital currently provides some clinics for patients with neurological conditions, but urgently requires a dedicated outpatient neurology service provided by a consultant neurologist. Without this local service your constituents are travelling 80km to Cork University Hospital to receive the care they so desperately need.

The need for consultant neurologists to provide local neurology services is recognised in the Neurology Model of Care with all Model 2 hospitals designated as requiring these services. Bantry General Hospital should continue to have these services for the local community as:

  • Prolonged travel increases the cost of healthcare for patients and the provider
  • The HSE cites travel as one of the primary reasons for the ‘Did Not Attend’ rate, increasing waiting lists
  • Local neurology services reduce unnecessary admissions, length of stay and unnecessary testing

Please support those living with a neurological condition in your constituency by calling for local neurology services in Bantry General Hospital to continue.

Yours faithfully,
